Have you ever wondered? Who was that man known as Jesus Christ? Why should you care? Did you know that His name was actually not Jesus, but Yeshua? When His name is translated into English, His name is actually Savior!
Christ, the name usually used as His last name, is actually not a last name at all, but a title, Messiah ( The Anointed One ). Many of the first century debates centered on whether or not the one that we call Jesus, was really the foretold Messiah. This explains all the controversies in our English Bibles concerning whether He was the Christ or not. When you look at the original languages, you find that the debates concerned whether He was the Messiah prophesied in the book of Daniel, or not.
Here are some of the things that the Bible says about our Savior:
His birth was a miracle, and had been predicted for centuries.
" Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was bethrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit."
Matthew 1:18" Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. "
Isaiah 7:14
This was written about 700 years before our Savior's earthly birth.
( Immanuel means 'God with us' ).
He performed many miracles.
" Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know-- Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death. "
Acts 2:22-23He was seen by over 500 people after His resurrection.
" For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time. "
1 Corinthians 15:3-8We know from church history that almost all of these 500 were martyred. Even under torture, they refused to deny Him.
To fully understand who our Savior was, we must understand who we are. We have three parts to our nature. We are human spirits who have a body. Together they constitute our soul, or identity. When our human spirit enters our body, it is said that we are born, and are living. When our human spirit leaves our body, it is said that we have died. Once created, our human spirits and our soul are immortal.
A brief answer to the question, " Who was the one called Jesus Christ? " is:
He was God manifest in the flesh. In other words, He was God appearing as a human being.
" And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory. "
1 Timothy 3:16It should stated here, that there are some corrupt modern Bibles, in which " Who " or " He " is substituted for God in the above verse. There is ample evidence, elsewhere in scripture, that our Savior was in fact, " God manifest in the flesh ".

It helps to understand the significance of the name, Jesus Christ. Jesus is actually a Latin word, which means SAVIOR. Somehow this word did not get translated into its English equivalent, when the English Bibles were produced. The word " Christ " means ANOINTED ONE or MESSIAH. Anointed is a religious term that means " endued with power ". When our Savior walked the earth, He told people His name. By telling people His name, He was telling them that He was, in fact, the Savior and Messiah. That was the name He gave them!
Much can be learned about the one called Jesus by reading the 2nd chapter of the book of Philippians. It tells us that, in heaven, Jesus was in the form of God, and equal to God. When He came to earth, and took on human form, being born to a human mother, He humbled Himself. In other words, He gave up His Godly power. While on earth, He operated in the power of the Holy Spirit, so that we could understand what we could do in the power of the Holy Spirit. He even said in John 14:12 that we could do greater works than He, because He was going to be with the Father.
Jesus was God, and He was a human being. But, He was not just an ordinary human being. Because He was filled with the Holy Spirit, He did many things that ordinary human beings cannot do, unless they also are filled with the Holy Spirit.
