Is God's name really Jehovah, as the people at your door are saying ?
The answer is emphatically no. But don't expect the people at your door to be willing to discuss it. It has been my experience that these people are not willing to listen and learn, because they have been brainwashed by their leaders not to consider anything as truth, except what their leaders write, or what is in their counterfeit Bible.

The New World Translation is not the Bible. It is a best, a translation of the Bible. It is written in such a way as to promote the beliefs of a particular sect. It is not an honest translation. When you read, even a small portion of this " Bible ", it is obvious that this " Bible " is a product of their religion, rather than their religion being based upon the Holy Bible.
Here's just one example. Consider the way in which their " Bible " treats the familiar passage, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” Since these people reject the fact that Jesus was God in a human body, they deliberately changed worship into " do obeisance ", a term that would describe a subject kissing the hand of a king. The word, which should be translated worship, is the Greek word " προσκυνησαι ". This word, or forms of this word, is translated worship at least 58 times, in legitimate Bibles, as " worship " and is never translated obeisance, or anything like obeisance. This Greek word is a root word behind our English word prostrate, as in the falling flat on one's face before God.
This Greek word is the same word used by Jesus in John 4:23,24 where Jesus says, "But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

The truth is, the people at your door were not the first to ( incorrectly ) say that the four Hebrew consonants above were pronounced as Jehovah. This had been going on in some circles for a few centuries,- before the group at your door were started. How the error began, but putting the vowels from Adonai into JHVH, is really irrelevant to this discussion. The name, Jehovah, first appeared in the ( protestant ) Darby translation, in 1881.
The bottom line is this: THERE IS NO J SOUND, OR A V SOUND IN THE HEBREW LANGUAGE. The Hebrew letter that is equivalent to our J is pronounced like our Y. And, the letter equivalent to our V, in Hebrew, is pronounced like a W. For example, how do you pronounce hallelujah? The J sounds like a Y right?
So, what appears on the surface to be JHVH, is properly pronounced as if it was YHWH. When you pronounce this word correctly, it sounds like Yahweh, or Yahwih, or Yahowah. I personally prefer Yahowah, however, the meaning of the name is far more important than the name, itself. The name of God ( YHWH or Yehowah ) means " I am the one who is God, the true God. " ( unlike all the false gods )
Most names in Hebrew have meanings. For example: Adam = man; Eve = life or life giving; Cain = possessed; Abel = mourning; Noah = rest; Isaac = laughter; Abaddon = destroyer; Samuel = heard of God; Satan = adversary or enemy or accuser; Peter = a stone; Jesus = Savior; Christ = Messiah or Anointed; etc.
It is not unusual for a Hebrew name to be changed because of a significant event in a person's life. Some examples: Abram = exalted father changed to Abraham = father of a multitude; Jacob = supplanter changed to Israel = prince with God, etc.
The true God has many names. YHWH is only one of them. He is called Elohim,
which relates to the plural nature of God, and also frequently refers to the God of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. He is called Adonai, meaning Lord or Ruler. He is called El-Shaddai, the God who is more than enough.
He also has many names which are combinations of YHWH and various attributes of God such as YHWH Jireh ( our Provider ) YHWH Shalom,
( our Peace ) YHWH Rapha ( our Healer ) and many others.

God answers the prayers of those who repent and seek Him. To repent, is to have a changed attitude concerning sin, and be willing to stop sinning. In order to stop the desire to do what is wrong, a person needs to receive a new heart, and a new spirit, from God. ( See Jeremiah 31:31-34 ) Don't make the mistake of thinking that you can reform, and change yourself. Only God can take away your desire for the things that have kept you in bondage.
Many people say that they don't believe in God, because they have been taught in school, as if God didn't exist. It is a common practice in public schools to allow the teaching of other religions, but not christianity. These schools, also often teach that life originated, all by itself, by a process called evolution. In spite of the fact that this is just an elaborate myth, unsupported by any real scientific evidence. It is taught as science, yet it is really just a perversion of history.
The whole concept of evolution is built upon the premise, that through accidents called mutations, complexity has increased again and again from less complex forms. THERE IS NO PLACE WHERE SUCH A THING CAN BE OBSERVED, NOR HAS IT EVER BEEN OBSERVED. Evolution is nothing more than a fabrication in the minds of men, who are not willing to submit to Almighty God as their Creator, and to obey His laws.
This theory, called evolution, is being taught in most public schools, as fact, to our children with our tax money! That should make you a little upset. That's why you should do whatever is necessary to homeschool your children, or send them to a christian school. If you have been tricked into believing the evolution LIE, and have neglected to have the proper relationship with God, you have no reason to expect God to answer your prayers.
